I may sound harsh or elitist to say this, but I can't deny that many of my favorite anime are psychological: and I've never even actively searched for titles in this category.
Perhaps this is partly due to all the psychology classes I took in college, or maybe something completely different ...
Whatever the case, I've come to appreciate anime that scrutinizes and portrays some pretty wild emotional states.
Psychological anime is not as big as other genres, so finding at least one good title for every new anime season can be difficult.
However, finding a great psychological anime isn't impossible - you just have to know where to look! And some of the best are right below.
40. Kakegurui (Kakegurui: Gambler, avid gambler)
I still remember well the first time I looked at OP.
The song was catchy and the accompanying video oozed with desire. And he exudes a femme fatale vibe that would be fitting for a series starring someone like Yumeko Jabami.
Kakegurui is not a perfect series. But it's very nice (like the second season).
It's hard not to admire the impressive character designs of Mary Saotome, Kirari Momobami, Itsuki Sumeragi, and Yumemi Yumemite.
Watching characters go into euphoria and then sink into deepest despair is a guilty pleasure, and MAPPA didn't hold back with their outrageous facial expressions.
Truly, Kakegurui is addictive.
39. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When they cry)
It's hard to recommend a show like When They Cry when one of its best elements is the surprise factor. So I won't go into details.
What I can tell you is that it aired back in 2007 but has retained its notoriety (or infamy) over the years.
Yes, this seems to be another one of those shows where the city guy returns to the rural part of Japan to relax and forget about the chaos of the urban jungle.
But given that I included this anime here, it's psychological, very psychological.
The 2007 series was a crazy race. I don't know if the new (but unfortunately shelved) 2020 anime project can live up to that.
