Tags: health education

It often happens that you urgently need to give yourself an injection, but there is no one around. Unfortunately, these situations can happen to anyone in life. We have compiled a guide for you how to make an injection yourself. Do injections yourself only in case of emergency!

Training

Wash your hands thoroughly before and after injections. Prepare the medicine. Inspect the contents of the ampoule, the liquid should be free of impurities and sediment. Also check the expiration date. Do not use the drug if it has expired.

Imagine that the thigh is a large rectangle. Find four sides where you can make an injection. Place your palm on the front of your thigh where it meets your groin. If injecting into the right thigh, use the right hand. If to the left, then use the left hand.

The area just below your hand is the top of the rectangle. Place your hand on your knee. The area directly above your hand is the bottom of the rectangle. Now imagine a line running down the middle of the front of your thigh. This is one long side of the rectangle. Then imagine there is another line along the outside of your thigh. This is the other long side of the rectangle. Now imagine that there is a line in the middle of your rectangle. This line goes straight from the groin to the knee. Any place along this line will be the best injection site.

Prick in the buttock, can be done with the help of a partner or standing in front of a mirror yourself. Draw a vertical line down the middle of the buttock, then a horizontal line. The top outer corner will be where the injection can be given. If you are not sure that you will prick in the place you need, then draw a small circle in this corner.

The deltoid muscle is located in the upper arm, just below the shoulder. To find this spot, place your palm on your shoulder and move your thumb out to the side to form an inverted V-shape. Make sure the middle of your arm is in the center of the V. You need to inject in the middle of the V shape.

Medication administration

Wipe the skin with alcohol, let it dry. Draw the required amount of medicine into the syringe. Release air bubbles by pushing the piston. Pull the skin tight. Hold the syringe like a pencil. Insert the needle in the chosen place, it should enter at a right angle. Take the required amount of medicine. Usually it is not more than 4 ml. When the prescribed dose of the drug exceeds 4 milligrams, you will need to divide it into 2 doses. You will give two injections in two different areas.

Pull out the needle and release the skin. Apply cotton wool moistened with alcohol, lightly press on the injection site. You can gently massage this area to help the drug absorb better. Light bleeding is normal. Use a bandage if necessary.

After the injection

Place the needle and syringe in a special container. Dispose of materials. Wash your hands well. The medicine that is in the single dose package should only be used once. If used a second time, it may contain germs that cause infections. Do not share another person's needles or medicines as this can cause infections such as hepatitis B and C.

When to Seek Medical Care

Call your doctor right away if:

  • the needle broke off and remained in the body;
  • the drug was injected in the wrong place;
  • incessant bleeding;
  • pain, bruising, or swelling;
  • severe allergic reaction;
  • dyspnea.

How to inject a cat yourself

your cat needs an injection, and the veterinary clinic is far away. In this case, you can independently inject, following the instructions:

  1. Find an area with loose skin on the back between the shoulder blades.
  2. Gently pinch this area between your thumb and forefinger. When you pull the loose skin up, you will see a small indentation in the skin between the fingers.
  3. Insert the injection syringe directly into this recess. Hold the needle at a right angle.
  4. After the needle is inserted, slowly inject fluids. The procedure will only take a few minutes.
  5. Withdraw the needle and gently pinch the skin for a few seconds to prevent the fluid from flowing back out.
  6. If there is no bleeding or fluid leakage, release the cat.

Praise and give her a big hug for being a good patient.
