15 fantasy movies influenced by Lord of the Rings

15 years ago, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring first hit theaters and subsequently redefined the fantasy genre.

During all this time, the series of films "The Lord of the Rings" significantly influenced the brainchild of cinema and television. The Peter Jackson trilogy set the bar for fantasy work and paved the way for both beloved hits and disastrous films.

1. Golden compass

Following the overwhelming success of the Lord of the Rings movie, New Line has set to work on yet another massive adaptation, The Golden Compass. The company began its creation three months after the debut of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, presenting the audience with the vastness of yet another fantastic universe. However, unlike the previous work of the film company, the film did not find a response in the hearts of people and its sequel never took place. Later, BBC One began work on the TV series Dark Materials, which also featured the plot of the original book The Golden Compass.

2. The Chronicles of Narnia

The Chronicles of Narnia franchise was also driven by the success of one of the New Line films in the Lord of the Rings series. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe hit theaters in 2005 and is a mixture of the fantasy world of the Lord of the Rings universe and the warm atmosphere of the Harry Potter films. Despite the fact that the last two parts of the Chronicles of Narnia franchise did not appeal to the audience, in the near future it intends to return to the screens under the leadership of Sony.

3. Earthsea

Earthsea was an attempt to bring the fantasy genre to television. The Earthsea miniseries based on Ursula Le Guin's novels debuted on Sci-Fi in 2004. Although the work was not crowned with success, more and more channels became interested in the idea of creating series in this genre.

4. Eragon

As well as the above pictures, the film "Eragon" was adapted from the fantasy novel of the same name by Christopher Paolini. the work was aimed at an audience of fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise, but the film did not attract attention from them. "Eragon" was criticized and collected a rather modest amount of money at the box office.

5. Pan's Labyrinth

Pan's Labyrinth is a lot different from the Lord of the Rings movie. The trilogy did not have much of an impact on the film by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. However, a connection began to be traced between these works when Guillermo del Toro was chosen to direct the Hobbit franchise.

6. Stardust

Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel Stardust is a little more modest than the Lord of the Rings books and films. However, his adaptations have a similar aesthetic to these works, as well as a cast of equally popular actors (Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer). The film did not find a smashing success at the box office, but despite the inexpensive special effects, it managed to prove that fantasy can be both strange and attractive genre at the same time.

7. Legend of the Seeker

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, formerly of the television series Hercules and Xena, have taken Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series of novels and turned them into The Legend of the Seeker. The duo set out to do a great job, which the filmmakers eventually did.

8. Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Rick Riordan's popular fantasy series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, served as the basis for two films that were well received by fans of the Harry Potter films. The success of the fantasy genre at that time allowed the picture to break out into well-watched films.

9. How to train your dragon

By the time the cartoon "How to Train Your Dragon" was released, viewers were already familiar with the fantasy genre. Now people were not alien to dragons, swords and magic. The cartoon received many positive reviews, thus proving that fantasy is very revered among viewers, if all the subtleties of the genre are presented from the right side.

10. The Hobbit

Obviously, this trilogy owes the most to the Lord of the Rings franchise. Warner Bros. clearly tried to replicate the success of the famous film series. However, the direction of Peter Jackson and the old cast made the film too much like the Lord of the Rings franchise. This move paid off, despite critics' neutral assessments.

11. Seventh son

The Seventh Son borrowed many of the details from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, making it a hit. Using The Witcher's Apprentice as the basis for the plot of the film and attracting a star cast (Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges, Alicia Vikander, Keith Harington, Julianne Moore, etc.) proves that studios and filmmakers are well aware of the reasons for the success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy ...

12. Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is rightfully considered the most popular fantasy series, but without the contribution of The Lord of the Rings trilogy to this genre, the series would hardly have reached such proportions. Game of Thrones is a big budget and incredibly high quality adaptation. A decade after the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Game of Thrones has reignited Hollywood's interest in the fantasy genre.

13. The Chronicles of Shannara

While Game of Thrones proudly bears the title of the most successful adaptation series since The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Chronicles of Shannara goes back to the roots of the trilogy: imagination, New Zealand landscapes and even actor John Rhys-Davis.

14. Warcraft

Film company "Universal" tried to bring the universe of computer games, filled with wars of orcs and humans, on the big screen. By the way, the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy has spawned many computer games of the same name.

15. Dark Tower

The movie "The Dark Tower" is based on the work of King, but the influence of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy on Hollywood is more than obvious. Stephen King's fantasy epic, dark and mysterious, differs significantly from the medieval style of the Lord of the Rings world. Despite the barriers, the fantasy genre continues to evolve and attract new audiences for TV series and big movies.
