How to survive in a student hostel

Tags: life

You went to college or university. Life in a student hostel is far from sugar. I hope that your joy does not disappear immediately after you cross the threshold of the hostel. To make your life easier there, I have a couple of tips.

Tip 1. Always wear slippers.

As a rule, the hostel is always dirty. It is possible and possible to walk in the room without slippers, but the corridor, the kitchen, the restroom and the shower room are the places where you cannot do without them. There are probably a lot of different microbes, parasites and other not-so-good things.

Tip 2. Get to know and make friends with your neighbors right away.

You are very lucky if adequate people live in the room with you, who respect your opinion and personal space. But be prepared for the fact that a roommate will constantly take her friends, a boyfriend to visit her, or she will not clean up a mountain of dishes and garbage after herself for several days. You should establish good relations with your neighbors, and not only with those who live with you in the room, but also with the neighbors “outside the wall”. You never know what situation can happen, suddenly these people can help you or even save your life, just because you have a good relationship.

Tip 3. Set your own things.

At a minimum, you need to have a set of your own bed linen, clothes and hygiene products. Swapping things is a great way to show friendliness, but on the other hand, it's bad manners. Especially in a hostel. Although it is unlikely that it will be possible not to share your things with anyone, but every resident of the hostel should have a certain set that will be “banned” for the rest.

Tip 4: Stand your ground.

If you are disturbed by loud one and a half hour conversations on the phone of your neighbor, then tell her about it. And when simple, calm conversations do not help in such situations, you can raise your voice and even threaten to go to the commandant. If you do not defend your opinion and your rights, then in the end you will simply sit on your head. This does not mean that for any reason you need to run to the commandant and complain, or immediately get into a fight, but you can’t be too soft and condescending either.

Tip 5. Be on the alert.

If you have agreed with your roommates that you have common dishes and food - okay, no questions. But if you have everything separate, then you have to hide it. Food, bowls, pans, even toilet paper - everything should be separate, because in any case, someone will want to use your things. And when you leave the room, be sure to lock it with a key. It’s not worth talking about valuable things such as a laptop, money, phone, jewelry. It is not necessary to leave them in a conspicuous place.

Tip 6. Polite communication with employees.

Always, even if you are in a terrible mood, smile, say hello, say goodbye and wish a good day to all the staff of the hostel: the watchman, security guard, cleaning lady, commandant. This will help you in the future. The watchman will let you into the hostel at night without any problems and allow your friends to visit, and the commandant will make concessions and help to calm down and even relocate the “violent” neighbors.

Tip 7: Remember that you are here to learn.

There is no strict parental control and you just want to oversleep couples or watch your favorite TV series with a pack of chips. And what a temptation to hang out with cool guys all night long, despite the fact that the exam is in the morning. Sometimes, of course, you can afford not to go to the first couple or skip the whole day. But remember that you are here first and foremost to learn.
