I had no idea this movie was even in production until the day it suddenly appeared in my category "Movies You Might Like", an area of Netflix that is usually as random as brain surgery with eyes. But presenceThomas Janein significantly dressed in overalls and the fact that it is based on a short storyStephen Kinggot me to check it out, and I was rewarded with a delightfully creepy supernatural murder story. It's something like"Simple plan", only set in the heart of pre-Depression America and contains real ghosts.
Jane plays a farmer who, at the end of his life, writes a full confession to a truly unforgivable crime, with the film told mostly in flashbacks. Within the first 60 seconds you will be slapped with the knowledge that Thomas Jane is doing something. His performance is absolutely flawless at its best, and to be completely honest, he's really not bad. It's a tense, slow-paced thriller with such a despicable central character that you almost don't mind if what he did ruins everything around.Nearly.

There's an undercurrent of black humor to everything that's going on that makes the film far more entertaining than you might expect, and performers such asArmie Hammer andBrie Larsonare more than willing to let their comedic sensibilities show. If you're looking for an action movie that's a little offbeat, a little different, give this one a try.

The film's structure is initially confusing and eventually quite satisfying, after Adkins' Kane Burgess, fresh out of prison, ends up in a local pub where he has the people responsible for his horrendous prison term punished for their bad deeds by going from memory to memory. as long as he keeps them at gunpoint. Few action performers can match the physical prowess that Adkins brings to the game, and with veteran stuntman Johnson, Adkins gets plenty of consistently filmed scenes, editing, and sets to showcase his skills. If you are a fan of DTV action movies this is a gem with some really amazing moments of violence.

The classic indie action movie for the ages.
