The monastery was founded in 1084 - 1085. in the Black Forest near the source of the Brigach River. The co-founders were Heselo and Gesso, a native of Reichenau, and the politician William Abbott of Hirzau Abbey. Heselo and Gesso wanted a monastery in Köningsegwald in Upper Swabia, but William insisted on his own. On his initiative, it was decided that the future gothic gem would be located in the city of St. Georgen. In the spring of 1084, novices from the Hirzau Abbey settled in the monastery. The church received immunity status in June 1085. After a while, a terrible fire broke out here, due to which the abbey fell into decay and lost the adjacent lands.
