15 countries where same-sex marriage is legal

Several countries around the world have legalized gay marriage, which has helped homosexuals live happily ever after without fear of torture or embargoes. While not every republic has welcomed these changes, there are countries that have supported this cause, and such states are listed below.

1. Netherlands

The first country to legalize alternative sexual preferences was the Netherlands. Thanks to the Dutch parliament, in April 2001, the Netherlands recognized same-sex marriage. This verdict was initially rejected between countries and domestically, but was eventually accepted.

With the dawn of this movement, many other countries followed the Netherlands. Same-sex couples have the right to marry, divorce or adopt children.

2. Canada

Canada is the first country outside Europe to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005. In addition, Canada is known as one of the most homosexual-friendly countries in the world.

According to public opinion, most Canadians support gay marriage. There are many gay villages in Canada where people live together and participate in many activities.

3. South Africa

South Africa has had a hard time legalizing same-sex marriage. Besides elephants and safaris, Africa is also known for its social stigma and various sexually transmitted diseases.

Sodomy was originally a crime in this country. Later, by 2006, homosexual marriage was legalized in South Africa.

4. Spain

Last year alone, Spain celebrated 11 years since the formation of same-sex marriage. In 2005 Spain recognized this move. At first, they organized a large protest march against this innovation, but between 2005 and 2016, more than 100,000 (homosexual) marriages were registered.

5. Belgium

Today, Belgium is known as the center of ISIS activity after the recent bombings, but in 2003 it became the second country to legalize same-sex marriage.

Since 1998, same-sex couples have been provided with limited civil liberties, however, later, through a referendum, equal rights were formed for every couple, regardless of orientation.

6. USA

The world's largest superpower, too, could not resist implementing this change. According to Justice Anthony Kennedy, homosexuals should not be "doomed to live alone." In 2015, the United States legalized same-sex marriage.

7. Portugal

The law on the legalization of homosexual marriage was signed by Silva in 2010. However, it does not authorize married homosexual couples to adopt children.

8. Norway

The Norwegian government passed a law to legalize same-sex marriage in June 2008. Thus, Norway became the first Scandinavian country to do so. Various weddings took place at the gay church and celebrations took place all over the country.

9. Iceland

In 2010, Iceland legalized homosexual marriage. In addition, it became the only country to be led by a gay person. Legalizing same-sex marriage in Iceland has never been a big problem. Since the head of state supported the law and was himself a homosexual, this inspired more people and eased the mood.

10. Argentina

Argentina also legalized same-sex marriage in 2010. Argentina became the first Latin American country to do so. Many protests were carried out by the Catholic Church, however, the law obliges same-sex couples to enjoy all the rights that heterosexuals practice when married.

12. Uruguay

Uruguay became the second Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage in August 2013. Legalization should have taken place much earlier, since the constitution is about freedom and equality.

13. Denmark

This bill was introduced by Helle Thorning-Schmidt. Subsequently, in 2012, same-sex marriage was legalized in Denmark. This allowed same-sex couples to adopt children.

14. England

July 2013 marked the legalization of same-sex marriage in England. The Parliament of the United Kingdom considered only England and Wales.

15. Colombia

The most recent country to legalize same-sex marriage is Colombia. The fourth country in South America to do so.

Same-sex marriage is not just an endorsement of preferences, but a general liberation from the limited mind raises the question of sexuality. They benefit not only a group of homosexual people, but many generations to follow, as adopted children of lesbian mothers have been proven to be far more competent than heterosexual mothers, both academically and socially. Thanks to this movement, many more children of privileged children will be adopted, and this, in turn, will benefit humanity.
