IOS 14: How to use the new Apple Translate app on iPhone

The iOS 14 update is full of major usability-improving features such as the App Library, home screen widget support, a redesigned Siri, picture-in-picture mode, and lots of little tweaks. Among them, Apple also introduced its own Translate app for iPhone. Apple is banking on tight integration with other services and better privacy through on-device translation with the Translate app to give it an edge over Google Translate. Let's learn how to effectively use the Apple Translate app on your iPhone in iOS 14.

Prior to iOS 14, users only had two options - Google Translate and Microsoft Translate to choose from. At launch, the Translate app only supports 11 language pairs, including English, Spanish, Russian, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and Arabic. The language support may seem thin at first glance, but the app is full of useful features like offline mode, conversation mode, dictionary add-on, history and more. Now that you have a fair idea of what this iOS translation app has to offer, it's time to explore it in more detail.

Step 1. Open the Translator app on your iPhone.

Step 2: In the upper left corner, look at your native language and then select the language you want to translate.

Step 3: Enter the text you want to translate and click "Go» on keyboard.

Step 4: You will see the real-time translation below your native language.

Step 5: You can also click on the microphone icon at the bottom and speak in your own language. The app will translate the phrase and speak the sentence in the translated language.

This can be useful when you are traveling and want to ask for directions or ask the locals.

Use conversation mode in the Apple Translate app on iPhone

Conversation mode is my favorite feature in the Apple Translate app. As the name suggests, it makes communication with native speakers flawless.

To turn on conversation mode, simply open the Translator app, make sure the portrait lock is off, and rotate your device to landscape mode. When the conversation mode is enabled, you can easily communicate with a person thanks to real-time translation.
