Top 18 Anime Idols (Idols)

Genre idol (idol, idol). The genre is arguably misunderstood due to its being dismissed as a simple slice-of-life musical series in which "cute girls/boys do cute things" in the first place.

To some extent this is true, but this is just one facet of the genre.

Generally, you don't expect the levels of story development in Death Note here. But the experience of watching a good anime idol is much more than meets the eye.

So, for this article, we have compiled a good selection of recommended anime idols that you might want to check out whether you are a fan of this genre or have recently become interested in this genre.

But before we get to the list, it's time to rank:

  • In anime, idols should be presented as an official unit/group.
  • Otherwise, they must be associated with the same organization (for example, a school).
  • Each episode of the same franchise can be a separate entry.
  • Both male and female anime idols will be on this list!

Okay, let's get started!

18. The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls

Year of issue: 2015

In a direct comparison, the topics presented as in the firstiDOLM@STER, so and inCinderella Girls are quantitatively identical.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with enjoying it.

But other viewers may find it a bit unsatisfying if they expect a different flavor this time around.

Luckily, the really funny characters make up for this apparent monotony, as well as a good dose of pretty catchy songs that will (hopefully) make you love their individual quirks.

17. Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000%

Year of issue: 2011

If you want an easy to digest anime idol with good characters and inspiring music themes, look no further.

Setting up a special school can be completely redundant, even when it was first aired/published (as a game).

But the characters and their individual development throughout the series is worth it. As for the songs, they are good.

Not the best, but as mentioned earlier, very inspiring.

16. Wake up girls!

Year of issue: 2014

Most anime idols so far have only shown very, very brief glimpses of the reality of being a pop idol in Japan.

Understandable, since that's not really what draws fans to anime idols.

This series reverses that disgust a bit.

Significantly more emphasis is placed on the dramatic elements (at least before it aired "Shin Show" ), and showcases just how cutthroat the Japanese pop idol industry can be.

But don't worry; you still get a very good dose of delightful interactions and good enough songs to satisfy your melodic appetite.

15. Friends of the Aikatsu!

Year of issue: 2018

Friends of the Aikatsu experiencedstrong pressureto keep the quality level of the presentation at the level of the previous two series.

Unfortunately, because of this, the impressions were a little less than expected.

Don't get me wrong, in terms of quality, it's still solid.Aikatsu .

But you may not want to think too hard about it.

The quality of the song is still top notch. Every episode here is amazing!

Expect many memorable moments when they are fulfilled.

14. iDOLM@STER SideM

Year of issue: 2017

Focusing on the group's team dynamics has always been a fundamental part of being an anime idol.

ForSideM this element becomes even more obvious.

While individual groups sort out their differences and goals, the agency itself is also growing, inspiring the rest of the other divisions.

As a bonus, the huge difference in age of each member also affects the level of interaction the show can provide. However, this does not greatly limit the story.

GiveSIDEM for a while shot, and their songs should give you a pleasant surprise.

13. Macross Delta

Year of issue: 2016

As the first Macross anime to feature a squad of idols rather than individual idols, this fits this list better.

True, the series as a whole was rather lackluster compared to traditional Macross games.

But he did introduce viewers to some really beautiful themes and put in songs. And combined with his setting and cast of characters, allows him to work his way through 13th place.

12. Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 2000%

Year of issue: 2013

The second season kicks off directly from the thematic conclusion of the first season.

The stakes are even higher, and the main male roster is already becoming an official idol group.

This season's songs will get a significant boost in terms of impact and impact, perhaps due to the development of the story-driven theme.

If you likedmaji love 1000% then most likely you will also likemaji love 2000% .

11. AKB0048

Year of issue: 2012

One would think that an anime based on a real-life idol group would introduce even more elements of life to present it in 2D.

But no.AKB0048 dives deep into science fiction about everything.

Think Macross Delta (setting, not plot) but more human oriented.

As an anime idol, it could feel a little over the top at some points.

But the sci-fi setting, the characters introduced, and even the "revolutionary" plot are all very welcome elements that complement the beautiful songs featured throughout the show.

10. Living love! Sunlight!!

Year of issue: 2016

The formula from which the first one eventually emergedLove Live!for mainstream fandom, no doubt good and damn effective.

It is clear thatsunshine I tried the same formula again... but only at the beginning.

Eventually, the series takes on a life of its own as various challenges challenge Acworth.

After all, the characters in this series would not be recognized today due to their different quirks if the anime were indeed exactly the same as the first series.

This, as well as their upbeat songs, also gave them a special vibe.

9. Living love! Project School Idol

Year of issue: 2012

Enjoying anime idols as a simple slice-of-life series with a musical twist is definitely one way to immerse yourself in the genre.

Best provenLove Live!and its quirky cast of bright students-hobby freaks .

But don't let his carelessness fool you. Between his episodic intro to the song and the whole school idol club going about their business, the theme of overcoming setbacks and obstacles is still very relevant.

And you will notice that this theme applies both individually and as a group.

Sometimes it's even intense enough to hold your breath, which you can tell really draws you to the series.

8.PriPara

Year of issue: 2014

There's something about the more silly themes of friendship that always draws a lot of viewers in one way or another.

PriPara presents this effectively, with core character development themes appealing to younger audiences and smarter (yet still simple) plot quirks that would make older audiences laugh. And, of course, great songs that will appeal to any audience.

Fair warning, though: the show's "conflict of the week" style can be a little tiring for some viewers who prefer a more linear story arc style.

7. Living love! Sunshine Season 2

Year of issue: 2017

While the first season couldn't directly compare to the first Love Live series, the second season is the moment it finally completes its standalone transformation.

It is no longer considered fundamentally similar, except, of course, for the usual "save the school" plan.

Now the girls are struggling with different aspirations while achieving the same goal of climbing to the top of Love Live.

Of course, the new season also has a good dose of cool new Aquors songs for you to listen to.

6. Aikatsu!

Year of issue: 2012

You just know that the series is already worth watching when the character interactions naturally fit with the basic logic of real life, despite being aimed at children.

And I'm just starting to take a little dip in the whole pool of goodness that isAikatsu .

The songs in this show are very beautifully arranged both in composition and timing.

It's not just emotional and inspiring; it might as well be life changing. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration... but you get the point. Definitely worth a look!

5. Aikatsu Stars!

Year of issue: 2016

Remember what I said about the originalAikatsu ?

Now enter some fresh characters and turn the dial up two more spaces.

By watching the first one, some may find out how the story develops.Aikatsu Stars!be quite predictable.

However, its themes are clearly much more mature, or at least the conflict might appeal to older audiences more than the previous one.

The songs are as catchy and thematic-sounding as ever, though their occasional repetition may put off some viewers. Although you can find songs here that you really like.

4. Zombieland Saga

Year of issue: 2018

Entertainment is a technical industry classification for idols.

However, for this anime, the word becomes completely different, with its rather unique take on the popular genre.

You would either laugh or cringe very hard at every attempt by the girls to promote themselves and the prefecture that their idol represents.

Ironically, since the show has this comical setting for girls, it becomesvery simple intro series into the idol genre.

3. Prism Rhythm: Rainbow Live

Year of issue: 2013

Perhaps taking to heart the many notes written down fromAurora Dream , rainbow live immediately starts with a bang.

It improves on many of the negative points of the previous series by introducing stronger themes and plot twists (twists) that, frankly, may actually be beyond the series' age target.

But that's what makes it really good.

That, and the characters are getting enough attention with the extended episode count.

Although, as a result, beautiful songs can sound monotonous again.

2. Living love! School Idol Project Season 2

Year of issue: 2014

The first season of this anime was certainly entertaining and introduced viewers to a new generation of idol characters.

The problem is that it wasn't much different from the already established franchises.

Second seasoneverything changes .

The stakes are higher. The motivation is stronger. The characters seem more sincere.

And the songs, perhaps due to Season 2's more inspiring themes, have even more impact when they're presented.

If you've been disappointed with the first series before, try this one.

At least later on, you'll know for sure if the idol genre is your cup of tea just from this show (be sure to start with season 2).

1. iDOLM@STER

Year of issue: 2011

Possibly a must.

But looking back at this series, we can see the foundations laid long ago in the original game as well as other groundbreaking series that finally introduced the concept of the idol group/troupe we know and love today...

Things like The Lemon Angel Project and Lovedol.

Basically, the series is an enjoyable and comfortable blend of drama, dynamic interactions (both within the 765 and with other units), and very catchy music.

Most notably, it has shaped the image of dealing with failure and ultimately achieving your milestones in the industry it is based on. An excellent series worth watching.
