How to troubleshoot a trackpad on a MacBook

MacBook trackpad issues, such as not registering clicks or not registering when and where you don't want it, can affect your ability to conduct business reliably and accurately. In extreme cases, erratic trackpad behavior can cause accidental data loss or alteration. Apple has released a software update that fixes some of these issues. Other standard troubleshooting steps, such as adjusting your trackpad settings, can fix issues not fixed by a software update and potentially save you time and money on support calls.

Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your computer screen and select Software Update from the drop-down menu. Locate the item titled "Trackpad Firmware Update" and check the "Install" box next to it. Check the boxes next to any other updates that appear and click the Install button at the bottom of the screen. Restart your computer if necessary.

Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences from the drop-down menu. Click on the "Keyboard and Mouse" option and select the "Trackpad" tab to access the trackpad settings. Look at the tracking speed and the double click speed sliders to make sure the pointer is set somewhere in between the Slow and Fast options. Deselect the options under Trackpad Gestures to see if that solves the problem. Under Trackpad Options, click the box that tells your MacBook to ignore accidental trackpad input. If you occasionally use a mouse, uncheck the box next to "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present." Close the Keyboard and Mouse window and see if the trackpad issues are resolved.

Turn off your computer and turn it over to check your MacBook battery for signs of bloating that can happen over time, especially if you're using an older laptop. Run your hand along the bottom to make sure the battery case is flush with the rest of the computer base. Otherwise, use a coin to turn the battery lock knob and pull out the battery. Look out for signs of bulge that can push the trackpad mechanism underneath and cause it to wobble. After removing the battery, connect the computer and turn it on again. If the mouse is working properly, the likely cause is the battery. Buy a new battery from the Apple store or online.
