7 wonders of the modern world

The CN Tower in Toronto, the Empire State Building in New York, and the Panama Canal are some of the engineering wonders of the modern era. In 1994, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) compiled a list of the seven wonders of the modern world to pay tribute to the greatest achievements of civil engineering of the 20th century.

7. Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge stretching across the Golden Gate Strait (width of the strait is 1.6 km, length is 4.8 km), connecting the San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. The bridge links the city of San Francisco, California, and Marin County.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the wonders of the modern world and has been named the most photographed bridge in the world by leading guidebooks.

6. Empire State Building

One of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Empire State Building, is located on Manhattan Island in New York. This 102-storey skyscraper reaches a height of 443.2 meters, and for almost 40 years was the tallest building in the world.

The Empire State Building is considered a symbol of American culture; it appears more than once on television, in cinema and literature. Nearly 110 million people have visited this New York landmark. The observation deck on the 86th floor offers an impressive view of the entire city.

5. CN Tower

The 555-meter CN Tower is another modern miracle of our world, which means it is included in the list of the seven wonders of our time. The tower, built in 1976, is located in the provincial capital of Ontario. For 34 years since the completion of construction, it bore the title of the tallest structure that has no support.

Today, the CN Tower - the tallest unsupported structure in the Western Hemisphere - is a symbol of Toronto and Canada. More than two million people visit the CN Tower every year.

4. Tunnel under the English Channel

The Channel Tunnel, or Eurotunnel, is a tunnel that runs under the English Channel and connects two cities: Dover, England, and Calais, France. The tunnel is 50.5 km long, of which 37.9 km are underwater. The lowest point reaches 76.2 meters.

The maximum permitted train speed is 160 km / h. Several train lines operate on the Eurotunnel line: Eurostar high-speed passenger trains, Eurotunnel Shuttle passenger shuttle trains and freight trains, and international freight trains.

Construction of the tunnel began in 1988, and its opening took place in 1994. Since the construction of the Eurotunnel, all kinds of emergencies related to fires and cold weather have constantly happened. Also in the past, illegal immigrants tried to enter the UK through a tunnel. Despite these problems, the Channel Tunnel is one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

3. Dam "Itaipu"

The Itaipu Dam is the largest hydroelectric project located on the Parana River on the border of Paraguay and Brazil. This project is an international venture completed in 1984. generating capacity of the station - 14 GW.

There are 20 generators involved in the project, of which 10 operate at Brazil's 60 Hz frequency and the other 10 at Paraguay's 50 Hz frequency.

2. Project Delta / Project Zuidersee

The Delta Project is one of the largest engineering projects of the 20th century in the Netherlands. The project included the construction of a huge system of dams, dams, water drainage systems, and land restoration work.

The Zuidersee project included shutting off a section of water in the North Sea bay and drainage of the land. The project aims to combat floods and help agriculture.

1. Panama Canal

The Panama Canal, a 77-kilometer-long man-made waterway located in the state of Panama, is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Through the Isthmus of Panama, it links the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, thereby fulfilling a vital function of facilitating international maritime trade.

One of the largest and most complex engineering projects of our time, the Panama Canal has dramatically reduced the time it takes for ships to travel between the oceans. Now ships can avoid the dangerous and time-consuming route around South America.
