15 famous lighthouses of the world

Lighthouses not only tell stories about the relationship of this place with the sea, but also about the culture of their land. Architectural buildings indicate the time in which they were built, which makes them part of the art. Although originally built to help sailors, they are now cult places for sea travel.

Over time, lighthouses become modern, as well as more technological, but for some reason not all of them are as attractive as those that were built in the past. Here are 15 famous lighthouses of the world:

15. Start Point Lighthouse, England

The Start Point Lighthouse was one of 29 lighthouses designed by James Walker. Inside the tower there are cantilevered granite stairs and outside there is a wedge-shaped parapet. The keeper's place, which is now outside the tower, was located inside, but it was removed in 1871.

This lighthouse is open to visitors and has been approved as a second level building by the England's Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission.

14. Fanad Lighthouse, Ireland

This lighthouse was built at Cape Fanad at the request of the people of the Fanad Peninsula after a huge ship sank in these waters in 1804. The 27-meter lighthouse was commissioned in 1818. Then, in 1909, a brighter lantern was installed, which worked on a clockwork rotation mechanism driven by weight.

This flashlight gave six flashes in fifteen seconds. And in 1975 this lantern was replaced with an electric one.

13. White Beach, Michigan

This lighthouse is unique not only in that it has an aluminum top, but also because it is the only lighthouse with red and white stripes in the United States. It was built in 1912 and is also known as Lake Michigan Lighthouse.

It is located close to the Mackinac Bridge, because of this, it was considered an excellent engineering achievement. You will have to rent a boat or seaplane to get a closer look.

12. St. Augustine Lighthouse, Florida

St. Augustine's Lighthouse was the first lighthouse built in Florida and had to be built twice because the first one fell into the ocean. The building that currently exists was made on Anastasia Island in 1874.

In 1907, a plumbing was installed at the lighthouse, in 1936 the light became electric, and in 1955 the lighting was automated. Due to the automatic lighting, the keepers of the lighthouse are no longer needed, and hence, from that time on, the guardian's house was rented by a local resident.

11. Lindau Lighthouse, Germany

Lindau Lighthouse is the southernmost lighthouse in the country and is located on Lake Constance in Lindau. After it was built in 1856, it settled in the Mangtrum Tower, which was erected in 1230. The height of the Lindau lighthouse is 33 meters, it is considered unique among all lighthouses, as it houses a huge clock that can be seen from the city.

In 1936, the tower was equipped with electricity, and in the early 1990s the lighting was automated.

10. Yakin Lighthouse, Oregon

Built in 1871, the Yakina Bay Light was created because there was no lighthouse in Newport. But three years later, a new lighthouse was built, and this one was decommissioned. It was supposed to be destroyed in 1946, but was saved by the Lincoln County Historical Society and the lighthouse was designated a Historic Landmark in 1951.

It is the only lighthouse on the west coast where the lantern and cabins are located in the same building. This lighthouse is believed to be haunted, so you can skip visiting.

9. Bass Harbor, Maine

In the middle of Acadia National Park on the southeastern part of the Desert Island Mountain is the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. It is the private residence of a member of the Coast Guard and his entire family.

Since 1858, the entrance to the lighthouse is limited to the entrance to the premises of the former guardian, but you can get close enough to the warning bell and the light. The view that opens after climbing the wooden steps is breathtaking.

8. Jeddah Light, Saudi Arabia

This lighthouse was built much later than other lighthouses. Its construction was completed in 1990. The height of the lighthouse reaches 130 meters. It is the tallest lighthouse in the world.

7. Tower of Hercules, Spain

After the highest, we move on to the oldest. The Tower of Hercules is known as the Farum Brigantius and the Lighthouse of Corunna and is believed to have been built in the second century.

Built by the Romans, this lighthouse is designed after the Alexandria Lighthouse. The tower, 55 meters high, is not entirely original, as it received an additional level in 1791. The lighthouse has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a National Monument in Spain.

6. Sambro Island Lighthouse, Nova Scotia, Canada

And here is another copy in the list of "old lighthouses". It is the oldest lighthouse in North America. It was commissioned in 1758 and automated in 1988. This lighthouse reaches a height of 25 meters.

5. Bell Rock Lighthouse, Scotland

The lighthouse got its name from the stone on which it was built. Bell Rock is the oldest surviving lighthouse in the world that is constantly washed by the sea. The height of the tower is 35 meters. For the first time, the light of the lighthouse was lit in 1811 and reached 35 kilometers. Bell Rock is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World due to the problems encountered during the construction.

4. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, North Carolina, USA

Hatteras Lighthouse is located on the outer shores of Hatteras Island. The first construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1802, and after reconstruction in 1870 the height of the tower is 64 meters. Of all the brick lighthouses in the United States, this is the tallest lighthouse and is still in use today.

3. Portland Head Lighthouse, Maine

This historic beauty sits right at the entrance to Portland Harbor at Cape Elizabeth. Portland Head is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the oldest in America. It was built in 1791.
