Character design is an important element in the success of any series or film, but it's not easy.
Artists must avoid over-complexity, meaninglessness and simplification. Otherwise, they would risk making regular anime MCs.
An easy way to distinguish a character from a cast is to give them points or, in this case, eye patch.
I'm sure you have a good idea of the most beloved anime characters with eye patches, but let me expand the selection a bit by choosing by years and even decades.
20. Midari Ikishima
Anime: Kakegurui: Player
Let's start my list with the rather edgy Midari Ikishimi from one of the most memorable MAPPA works of the last decade,Kakegurui .
Midari doesn't need to be spoken to convey her sadomasochistic (but mostly masochistic) personality:
Her piercing, pistol, tiny but piercing pupils and outrageous expression are enough to give others fair warning about approaching the President of the Hyakkau Private Academy Improvement Board.
Why is Midari wearing an eye patch?
Nothing special.
She simply stabbed herself in the eye with a pen to pay for her losses against Kirari Momobami. It's funny and hardcore, but the fansKakegurui would not want it otherwise.
19. Sven Wolfid
Anime: Black cat
Black cat already quite old.
While I found Train Heartnet's protagonist memorable in the long run, the deuteragonist Sven Wollfied remains in my memory.
How could I not admire its design and personality?
The 30-year-old former agent has a stylish look: a white suit and shoes, a red tie, a blue shirt and black shoes.
Sven is an absolute gentleman, always showing respect to both children and women, if it does not involve mortal risk.
He doesn't let dire situations get the better of him, and his magic in crafting weapons and equipment is bewildering.
In addition, Sven's bandage has a bittersweet origin:
Sven lost his right eye, but little did he know that his psychic partner Lloyd Goldwynn had already signed up as an organ donor just a week before his death.
18. Kiyoma "Crow" Senji
Anime: Deadman Wonderland
Anyone else like his Crow Claw?
This is similar to what would happen ifPokemon's Scyther was shipped (i.e. inisekai -d) to the unforgiving worldDeadman Wonderland .
His blood-red weapon, which can change shape (and length to the death of his enemies),so good looks like a fight.
But there is much more to Crow:
This is a man who rebelled against crime when the rest of the police succumbed to corruption - and he lost four dear friends because of this fight for justice.
It's nice to see that while he seems to be violent like Deadman, there's still something good about him. Enough to help Ganta survive in a prison/amusement park hybrid.
17 Badou Nails
Anime: Stray dogs howling in the dark
VDog: Stray Dogs Howl in the Dark it's all but forgotten these days.
But David Production's 2009 OVA really gave anime fans an interesting, red-haired, eye-patch-wearing, chain-smoking MC.
Of course, the screen didn't have enough time to learn more about him (and his adventures with Hein), but four episodes showed that he was enjoyable to watch.
I don't even know which side is better:
Is it his charming cheerful personality when he smokes, or just sees an ordinary cigarette stick?
Or is it his irritated version of a killing machine, once nicotine-free?
However, I want another adaptation of the original manga.
16. Good Holiston
Anime: Baccano!
I never expected to find a name like "Good Holistone" in any work or genre of fiction, but here I am gratefulbaccano and its stellar cast.
Nice Holystone has one of my favorite (simple) character designs:
She wears an eye patch to hide her empty right eye socket, but also wears goggles to protect her damaged left eye.
Then you see her red collared sleeveless top and black sash around the neck.
Also, I really like the relationship between Nice and her boyfriend, the uptight Jacuzzi Splot gang leader who shows courage when it counts.
Nice also has good leadership qualities.
And when she doesn't have to take the helm from the hot tub, you can rely on her for all the explosions: the reason she lost her right eye in the first place.
15. K.K.
Anime: Blood blockade front
KK reminds me of Pakunoda fromHunter x Hunter , and that's a big plus, because I think it's pretty damn cool.
LikeKiyomase Senji from Deadman Wonderland , KK uses his blood for deadly purposes.
Instead of a blade like weapon, her bloodturns into electricity to improve her weapon skills.
But more than her stylish clothes and strength, it's her maternal and feminine qualities that make her stand out (in a good way).
I love how K.K. highlights the burden of a woman who wants the best for her child, but also has a job that cannot be ignored, even if it means ignoring parental responsibilities.
Cheerful, caring and charming when she's into soap operas and gossip, KK is a valuable part ofBlood Blockade Front .
14. Saito
Anime: Ghost in armor
Saito doesn't look like he's joking, and that's what everyone who isn't close to him or an ally should be thinking, if only for their own sake.
Indeed, he is not as cyborg as the rest of Section 9.
But why would he look for additional body modifications if he is already exceptionally skilled with firearms and, in fact, a god tier sniper?
If you need help taking out enemy snipers, just ask Saito.
He is terrifyingly accurate in his punches. And he can also get a good idea of where the other snipers are due to his extensive combat experience from WW4 before joining Section 9.
13. Mei Misaki
Anime: Another
Mei Misaki and the restAnother it must be hard to become less popular than Yukari Sakuragi, a minor character whose early death scene in the series is a perennial favorite in the general anime community.
But once you get past the umbrella memes and see the series for yourself, you'll appreciate Mei too.
May had a traumatic past. Particularly due to the early death of her twin sister, whom she initially thought was just her cousin, and also because she lost her right eye.
Hence her doll prosthetic eye, which can peer into dark deeds.
On the other hand, her current situation of social isolation is also appallingly unhappy (not like she doesn't look like her, but rather like she doesn't even exist).
However, her decision to (temporarily) stop the curse herself shows that she is one of the most selfless characters in anime.
12. Captain Harlock
Anime: Space Pirate Captain Harlock (1979)
As the oldest entry on my list (and one of the oldest anime series), Captain Harlock is a testament to the longtime appeal of vintage character designs.
There is a 2013 movie, but it uses 3D CG instead of 2D animation.
Captain Harlock (or Herlock) is the protagonist here: a man with long brown hair that you'd rather not brush due to how good it looks, especially when paired with his eye patch and cross scar.
space pirateeasily attracted their appearance and personality.Many fans praise his thoughts and actions, his individualistic outlook on life, and his ability to introspect in relation to his principles.
He believes in the ability of people to bring about systematic change, he keeps his promises and values the life of every crew member, no matter how small their role.
Best of all, Captain Harlock doesn't immediately turn to violence when he's being hunted, preferring instead to discuss the matter and hopefully enlighten others, if only because he still cares about Earth.
11. Lavie
Anime: D. Gray-man
Between D.Gray-man and its continuationD. Gray-man Hallow - ten years.
And both are blessed to have the fun and (admittedly) beautiful redhead that Lavi is.
It has changed in many ways after over 100 episodes. But he still retained his eyepatch and (mostly) pleasant demeanor.
Lavi's development from someone who forces himself to be socially apathetic to a guy who finally feels more comfortable and attached to his peers (and humanity in general) is nothing new in anime.
But this does not detract from the satisfaction that I received from his growth.
After all, Lavi is a smart and funny dude who can cheer you up when things get murky in Allen Walker's world.
10. Megumin
Anime: Konosuba: God's blessing on this wonderful world!
Like a queen (or princess) of explosionsisekai , Megumin is one of the most popular characters frombandages eyes in the late 2010s.
How about hernot be?
She's small, funny, and completes everyone's favorite Kazuma squad.
In addition, the film highlights her Crimson Demons clan, which includes Yunyun, Megumin's charming self-proclaimed opponent.
Yes, Megumin stopped wearing a bandage all the time, but that's okay.
At the very least, viewers should have known howchunibie .
This is a bit ironic considering she's in a fantasy world and her burst magic is insane, although this comes at the cost of draining her mana and causing her to collapse right after casting the spell.
9 Worick Arcangelo
Anime: Gangsta.
Gangsta. was poised to become one of the best recordings of the summer of 2015, given the manga's source material and the return of composer Tzatchi, who is known in the anime community for his work oncowboy bebop .
Unfortunately, Manglobe had bankruptcy issues that inevitably affected the production of the anime. After this news, it's almost nowhere.
However, there is enough material to understand the appeal of Vorik Arcangelo (and deaf MC Nicholas Brown).
It was a 35-year-old man with blond hair in a ponytail and an eye patch. He is attractive in his own way, given his penchant for smiling and his seemingly laid-back demeanor, so much so that women quickly notice him.
Plus, he can memorize so many specific details and look through entire books with ease.
However, this amazing ability also means that he has a hard time forgetting the most traumatic events in his life, forcing him to remember every horrific detail.
8. Sofia Valmer
Anime: Jormungand
SofiaValmer , the only female bodyguard in Koko's squad, can feign bloodlust and madness like Midari Ikishima fromKakegurui , except that she is actually adept atcirculation with weapon.
However, it's her knife prowess that makes her one of the baddest female fighters in non-fantasy anime.
If her opponents have weapons, she won't mind:
Sophia can just slash and slash them all while dodging bullets, even with her eye missing.
If you haven't seen her in action, check out her fight scenes.
It's surprising how intimidating her mere presence is, with her tall stature and relatively muscular build, while still retaining a feminine charm.
7. Kenpachi Zaraki
Anime: Bleach
Isn't it amazing how a character who literally didn't have a name in his youth ended up with a name that not only honored his lawless neighborhood, but also how powerful he became?
Kenpachi Zaraki is one of the most familiar charactersBleach - and he is one of the highest rankingshonen on my list.
This Shinigami has an intimidating look (due in part to how much soap he puts on his hair) and his love of fighting is unparalleled.
But while this main interest of his is easy to criticize, he also becomes more admirable when you see that he doesn't go beyond fighting.
Kenpachi has no interest in killing opponents (unless they refuse to stop fighting).
And he will no longer continue if they seem too weak to continue.
Also, I really like how his eye patch goes through numerous design changes.
6. Asuka Langley Soryu
Anime: Evangelion: 3.0: You (can't) repeat
Even if her beautiful pirate headband (with a tiny glow) was only introduced in the third partRebuild of Evangelion , it was more than enough to catapult her to this place.
After all, Asuka is one of the best anime girls of all time.
And her undeniable charisma is very much present inYou Can (Not) Redo .
It is unclear why she was the one wearing the eye patch in Part 3.
But there is good reason to believe it was due to her horrific ordeal in Part 2, "You can (not) advance" . Fans are just not sure if it's due to angel infestation or serious injury.
However, Hideaki Anno has put millions of Asuka fans around the world at ease with his amazing looks.
And I love that it's also a reference to her iconic battle inThe End of Evangelion .
5. Ken Kaneki
Anime: tokyo ghoul
Look, I know everyone wants a reboot of the anime adaptation.
But you can't completely hate the series.
Tokyo Ghoul there were top notch OP and ED theme songs, and Ken Kaneki's final fight against Jason in season one was worth the hype.
Also, Ken's character development (and transformation from human to one-eyed ghoul) is amazing.
He was a shy guy who just wanted a date with the beautiful Rize Kamishiro. But it turned his life upside down, introducing him to a world where ghouls and humans either strive for unity or kill each other in their quest for dominance.
And he definitely deserves this place:
One of his aliases literally translates to "eye patch".
4. Rikka Takanashi
Anime: love, chunibyo and other delusions!
Idolmegumin, probably is RikkaTakanashi, young woman-chuunibyo #1 in anime history that reminds a male MC that he can't escape lifechuunibyo .
Her eye patch supposedly hides amazing powers. Although this is an ordinary eye with a colored contact lens.
But there is a good reason why Rikka does this.
And it is precisely to showwhy she acts like that, the anime becomes more than just a well-animated (it's from Kyoto Animation, after all) high school slice-of-life comedy.
Even if you haven't seen the series and movie yet, you've probably seen her photos on anime forums.
Seriously, the kawaii gif loop in which she drew circles with her hands was all over the place back then.
3. King Bradley
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
It's hard to forget the intensity and madness of King Bradley. Especially considering how seemingly gentle and even friendly he was on the show.
Thus, it is only fitting that he is the first Fuhrer of Amestris:
His high-ranking military uniform and mustache will easily remind viewers of Adolf Hitler, a very thoughtful design decision.
Like the German dictator and fascist, he was (originally) a man who wielded enormous political power and had evil intentions behind his facade.
Finally, King Bradley is already fearsome with one sword in hand.
But then you realize that he can wield many at once - and that's before he releases the Ultimate Eye hidden under his eyepatch.
2. Kakashi
Anime: naruto
Kakashieasy most popular wearing eyepatchShounen character, andnaruto fans will know that he deserves love and admiration.
Of course he was just funny and mysterious and twisted.shinobi, leading the team of the main trio from the very beginning.
But Kakashi has become so much more than that.
As the famous Kakashi of the Sharingan (which is why his forehead protector became a patch for his left eye), he is one of the most powerful ninja of Konoha.
He can go toe-to-toe with both Kisame and Kakuzu, and his contribution to the downfall of Kaguya Otsutsuki is far from insignificant.
Kakashi absolutely deserves to be the Sixth Hokage - and fans should see more scenes of him in full.
1. Ciel Phantomhive
Anime: Dark Butler
When I think of blindfolds, no other anime character comes to mind first.
I'm not sure that "Black Butler" still popular today, but I have no doubt about Ciel's longevity.
First, he has a fitting elegant name and beautiful character designs:
Ciel has a slender body, dark blue hair, striking blue eyes, a noble outfit, and his trademark eye patch that hides his contract with Sebastian.
The Internet is replete with his fanart and cosplay.
And secondly, his (non-romantic) chemistry with his demonic butler is one of the best in anime. Whether they're doing anything important or uncovering secret cases, he's there.
I don't think the anime is done. And I'm sure fans would welcome the new season (or at least one movie) with open arms.
