List of the best science fiction films

Science fiction, perhaps the best genre in the entire cinematic arena. It's an incredibly flexible and inclusive field that allows writers, directors, and actors to showcase their creativity without being limited to other genres. All sci-fi films can contain elements of action, drama, romance, adventure and mystery (the best of them are a mixture of subgenres) without blurring the lines; the same cannot always be said the other way around. In essence, science fiction is a genre in which everyone will find something for themselves.

Through the snow

Director: Jun Ho Bong

Writers: Jun Ho Bong, Kelly Masterson

Cast: Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton

Before the series of the same name hits TBS (of all places) in 2020, you'll want to check out ASAPSnowpiercer on Netflix. Set in a future where a failed climate-correction experiment has killed all life, the last few lucky humans travel aboard the train-traveling Snowpiercer. However, humanity is resorting to the same evil that has divided each other for millennia, resulting in a class structure that divides and divides travelers along the entire length of the train. The conflict between classes leads to an escalation of violence and the revelation of terrible, terrible truths.

Snowpiercer damn close to a perfect movie. It perfectly encapsulates many if not all of the vices of society and the primitive forces that move human beings, even those who claim to be civilized. The cinematography is one of a kind due to the sprawling and linear nature of the train itself, forcing the camera and audience to watch the narrative unfold in a side-scrolling fashion. The action unfolds in unique and compelling, albeit harrowing, ways, all the more powerful because of the social strife that forms the backdrop. This is a truly remarkable story, from top to bottom and from cover to cover. Look for it sooner rather than later.

Okja

Director: bong joon ho

Writers: Bong Joon Ho, Jon Ronson

Cast: Ahn So-hyun, Tilda Swinton, Steven Yeun, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Giancarlo Esposito, Lily Collins

One of the highest profile movies to hit Netflix but the traditional theatrical roll's bypass was Okja , bong joon ho 's follow until 2013 in Through the snow . This is the drastic destruction of both the modern agricultural industry and the interconnected science of genetic engineering. History pushes science to extreme and sometimes ridiculous proportions and does not try to portray useful real achievements in an equal light. However, it is hard not to notice the moral of this story: people who play God soon lose their very humanity.

Okja follows the title character, a genetically engineered, naturally/organically raised super animal in South Korea by caretaker Mijay. Because Okja is the best farmed animal, the multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation is committed to reclaiming their property and scrutinizing it to recoup their investment and improve their livestock, both agriculturally and financially. Mia does everything in her power to get her friend back home, although animal rights activists, hired corporate forces, and even the media will make things difficult. These are difficult hours at times, especially for those at the forefront of the fight for animal welfare, but the lesson is still worth repeating.

Other

Writers/Directors: Zach Lipowski, Adam B. Stein

Cast: Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, Lexi Kolker

I'm going to keep one of the main things that strike me aboutZach Lipovskikh andAdam B. Stein 'sfreaks at the very end of this because I would suggest jumping into this story knowing as little as possible. But know that this is one of the best sci-fi thrillers of 2019 withparticipation characters. The film shows howLexi Kolker plays seven year old Chloe. She spent her whole life in complete isolation from the world in her home with her father Henry (Emil Hirsch). He always told her that the outside world was a dangerous place, but the older Chloe got, the more she was tempted to go outside - and then, finally, she did. Okay, are you ready for that semi-killer detail to further highlight just how wildly impressive this movie is? Here it is; I, like everyone else, love a good big budget superhero movie, but if you want to see what can be done on a limited budget in this genre, "Freaks" is what you need to see. It's one of those movies where you lean more and more into your early curiosities before bursting into a full blown creativity as Chloe learns more and more about her reality.

Remember everything

Director: Paul Verhoeven

Writers: Ronal Shusett, Dan O'Bannon and Gary Goldman

Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside and Ronnie Cox

If you're in the mood for a great 80s/90s sci-fi action movie, you can't go wrong withTotal Recall . In filmArnold Schwarzenegger plays a construction worker who suddenly finds himself drawn into a world of espionage involving a colony on Mars. It's crazy, weird, funny and exciting, and Schwarzenegger is superbly executed. Go to Mars!

Skyline 2

Writer / Director: Liam O'Donnell

Cast: Frank Grillio, Johnny Weston, Bojana Nvakovic, Iko Uwais, Yayan Rukhian, Antonio Fargas, Lindsey Morgan, Betty Gabriel

Skyline is a special kind of WTF. Of all the films that spawned the franchise, I would never have thought that such a derided 2010 sci-fi film skyline will be able to do it, not to mention that the next film will be such a fun, exciting adventure that spans the whole world. . A proud, beefy B-movie with aliens that rip your brain right out of your skull,Skyline playsFrank Grillo as a police officer who disagrees with his son (Johnny Weston) when an alien attack forces them to fight for their lives. Once the aliens make contact, the film ricochets across the settings and characters at breakneck speed, packing a series of sci-fi madness-worthy paperbacks into one feature film that travels from the underground tunnels to the nuclear wastelands of Los Angeles to the alien ship, and the whole way to Laos, where Mark teams up with the rebels to fight the alien threat. You have Frank Grillo as a hero with a baby in one hand and a space blaster in the other, Antonio Fargas as a Vietnamese veterinarian who calls everyone "bitch" Iko Uwais and Yaya Ruhain, beating giant aliens to death, and there's even an outright kaiju fight.beyond the horizon not for everyone, but if you like the B-movie about bananas, then the feature-length debut of the writer-director Liam O'Donnell checks all boxes.

In the shadow of the moon

Writer / Director: Jim Mickle

Scientific - fantasy crime thrillerJim Mikla somehow eluded the spotlight this year despite being on Netflix and overall being a fun, well-executed sci-fi tale.Boyd Holbrook plays a cop who gets caught up in a horrific series of crimes and is trapped by cat mice that define decades of his life... and confound him into some twisted tragic time travel saga could have saved the country's future. An obsessive crime drama that basically keeps it low despite extreme stakes, In the shadow of the moon has the occasional unfortunate habit of thinking it's more ahead of the audience than it really is, but its still an intriguing, gripping and technically well-executed time travel saga worth digging into.

Midnight Special

Director / Screenwriter: Jeff Nichols

Cast: Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Sam Shepard and Jayden Martell

If you like earthy sci-fi indie movies, you should watchmidnight special . This underrated 2016 movie takes place in Texas and is about a father (Michael Shannon ), who is forced to flee with his son (Jayden Martell ) when his son is revealed to have special powers. The bond between father and son, persecuted by both the government and the sect, is subjected to various tests.Adam Driverplays an NSA public relations analyst with a personal interest in the boy, and although it sounds like a superhero movie plot, Nichols approaches the material in an extremely realistic and grounded manner. This is a Sundance movie with amazing performances and minimalist visuals that puts a lot of emphasis on characters rather than plot twists or giant sets. And Shannon plays the deeply intimate role of the boy's father.

Dumb

Director: Duncan Jones

Screenwriter: Michael Robert Johnson

Cast: Paul Rudd, Alexander Skarsgard and Justin Theroux

Mute is a damn weird movie, but if you ever wanted to see how Paul Rudd plays a despicable character and kicks him out of the park, this is for you. The second in an unofficial trilogy of loosely related films, Mute follows in the footsteps Duncan Jones « moon and takes place in the year 2035. Alexander Skarsgard plays a dumb bartender named Leo looking for a woman he loves who has mysteriously disappeared. Meanwhile, Rudd and Justin Theroux play rather deranged surgeons who play the main roles in the film. Silent is a gritty film that doesn't offer an optimistic portrait of the future, but if you're into it, it's a darkly fun ride.
