Hitman is a simple game that paves the way for an extraordinarily complex game. You enter a level with a goal. You can eliminate this target in any way you like. You can be at a fashion show in Paris, or you can be in the market in front of the Moroccan embassy. You can stay in a large Italian villa, or in a posh hotel in Bangkok. Wherever you are, you're likely to be impressed by Hitman's carefully crafted watch communities as they move forward, inviting you to explore and use them. The main plot kills are the tip of the iceberg, as repetitive escalations, player-created objectives, and elusive targets round out a supremely enjoyable collection of stealth, costumed, and espionage challenges. Yes, blood money would be great, but Hitman represents the pinnacle of the series.

You are alone on an island surrounded by puzzles. This is The Witness, an extremely difficult game that is actually very simple. Some of the puzzles are obvious: they are on the screens right in front of you, stacked in orderly rows. Other puzzles are much harder to find. All of them will baffle and confuse you, but over time you will gradually take them apart until the game's grandiose design is laid out before you like the work of a finely crafted clock. In some games, you level up your character to gain access to new areas; this one makes you level up. There's a little more to the fun in gaming than when you finally figure out the solution to a puzzle in The Witness. A new door opens with a click.

WhenDivinity: Original Sin came out in 2014, it seemed too good to be real. It's a PC RPG that combines turn-based tactical combat, Ultima-style world simulation, and paper-based co-op RPG. That was great. A year later, Original Sin was re-released as an Enhanced Edition with major improvements. The game is working great now! With controllers, you can now play the entire game in split-screen co-op mode. There are many new items and abilities, the story has been reworked, and the scenario is now fully voiced.

Undertale may look like a retro-styled JRPG, but it's extraordinarily forward-thinking. You are a human stuck in a monster world, deciding if you want to win fights with gratuitous violence or smart contextual interactions (talking, joking, petting, etc.).Undertale keeps track of everything you do; he pays very close attention and often expresses it in surprising ways. Every life you take has consequences in the end. Despite these grim attributes,Undertale can be an incredibly warm, fuzzy and fun game. Whether you kill everyone or be friends with them (or go the middle way) is up to you. The writing in this game is top notch, the soundtrack is second to none, and the story hides a treasure trove of secrets that players haven't yet fully uncovered.

This is one of the few video games that can be called a national obsession. XCOM 2 has tweaked or redone just about every little thing in 2012's XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a game that was already good enough to win Kotaku's Game of the Year 2012 award. The game is meaner and faster than its predecessor; most missions have timers to push you forward and take risks, and new types of aliens will break even your most time-honored strategies. You will become more attached to your team of customizable soldiers than ever, making it harder for you to watch their gruesome death in the field.
