Fake Security Cameras - Do They Really Help?

Surveillance cameras have long been one of the main elements of home security systems. Apart from their obvious function as a recording device, they are also an effective deterrent - about 60% of burglars indicate that they will not even try to break in if security features such as alarms or cameras are present. 1 Good security cameras can be expensive, which is why many people turn to fakes in an attempt to fool criminals while saving money.

Does it actually work? Are Fake Security Cameras Effective? Let's take a look.

Good bad evil

Pros:don't get us wrong - artificial surveillance cameras have some advantages, and in general we would say that having them is better than nothing. Let's look at some of the pros:

  • They cheaperthan real cameras: Fake surveillance cameras tend to be quite inexpensive. You can potentially equip your entire home with dummy cameras for the price of just one or two real cameras.
  • They are easy to install:since fake cameras don't have wires to route or receivers to set up, you're looking at a simple installation process. Typically you just mount the camera where you want it with a few screws and call it a day. It's not much easier than that.
  • They can deter some criminals:probably the best thing we can say about fake security cameras is that they are better than nothing. It's possible that a scammer might go astray and walk past your house because they believe the cameras are real.

Minuses:when it comes to dummy security cameras, there are a few obvious problems

  • They can have possible legal implications: While you can probably use fake cameras in your home, using them elsewhere, like your office, can open you and your business to potential legal issues. 2 The main problem is that you can create a false sense of security for employees and building visitors.
  • No footage means no evidence:in case someone breaks in, law enforcement will probably ask to see footage from your security cameras. Being fake, these cameras didn't produce any footage. Many times, footage doesn't mean it doesn't lead.
  • They are easy to see with a trained eye:although fake cameras can fool amateur thieves, anyone with some experience can easily fake a fake. For example, the flashing red light that every dummy camera seems to have is almostnot found on real cameras. Such details are nothing, that the camera is a fake. Instead of keeping seasoned criminals at bay, fake cameras can actually backfire - give them confidence that you have no real security measures in place and that your home is safe to break into.
  • They will not provide true peace of mind. The biggest problem we see with fake cameras and other tricks is that they will always surprise you. Will thieves be held back? Will they fall in love with it? Real cameras don't leave you alone because even if someone breaks in, you have footage that can be used by the police to track down a suspect.

What are the alternatives to fake cameras?

While containment is great, you need security solutions that provide some sort of fallback if things go wrong.

Install real security cameras

The most obvious alternative to an artificial camera isreal camera. While working security cameras may not be as cheap as dummies, they are more effective at preventing burglary. As a result, we would consider them more cost-effective in the long run. In the event of a hack, the greater utility of real cameras almost certainly offsets the initial cost.

If budget is a major concern, you can install a reasonable sub-$100 system with an indoor and outdoor camera, cloud storage for footage, and some decals and stickers. Check out our guide to budget home security systems.

Invest in a home security system

A complete home security system includes cameras, but it also covers a number of other devices that can both enhance the benefits of cameras and provide new ones. A complete security system may include features such as door and window sensors, motion-activated lighting, smart locks, and 24/7 monitoring.

You have many options these days, from small do-it-yourself installations to fully controlled, professionally installed systems. If you're not sure where to start, check out our roundup of the best home security systems on the market.

Set up motion-activated lights

Moving lights can act as a deterrent while providing much-needed illumination to dark areas of your home or yard. Fraudsters tend to avoid well-lit houses because it's much harder to go unnoticed. Motion-sensitive lights can also startle would-be burglars, who can scare them off before they get a chance to make a break-in attempt. They are also handy if you ever need to take your pet out after dark.

Get a guard dog

A well-trained guard dog can serve as a reasonably effective signaling system, deterrent, and line of defense against burglary. Even an untrained animal can be enough to scare off intruders, especially if it is large. Relying on a dog for home security has some downsides, but not least is that you can put your pet at risk. While we don't recommend getting a dog strictly for safety reasons, it can be a nice side benefit of having a loyal pet. Just don't make it your only defense!

Use smart locks on your doors

A strong bolt is one of the most basic and important levels of security you can have at home. With a smart lock, you can take it one step further to a basic door lock. Smart locks provide all the benefits of a conventional deadbolt, while also adding some extra security and convenience features such as biometric sensors and smartphone compatibility. Like many smart home devices, they can be a bit pricey, but can pay dividends in convenience and increased security.

After all, fake security cameras remind us of a lot of fake security signs. They have many of the same advantages, such as being cheap and easy to set up, but they also have the same disadvantages - in case a scammer calls your bluff and you really need security, they provide nothing. In our opinion, it's just not worth the risk.
