Scarlett Johansson was born in New York. Her mother, Melanie Sloan, is from a Jewish family from the Bronx, and her father, Carsten Johansson, is an architect from Denmark, from Copenhagen. She has a sister Vanessa Johansson, who is also an actress, brother Adrian, twin brother Hunter Johansson, born three minutes after her, and paternal brother Christian. Her grandfather, Einer Johansson, was a writer.
Johansson started acting as a child after her mother started taking her to auditions. She made her professional debut at the age of eight in the Broadway production of Sophistry with Ethan Hawke at New York's Playwrights Horizons. She auditioned for commercials, but after the rejections, her mother began to limit her to films only. She made her film debut at the age of nine as the daughter of John Ritter's character in the fantasy comedy North (1994).
